Jewish Culture Week in Toruń

Film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, concert and wine tasting will be made up of Jewish Culture Week, which began on 16th of January in Toruń. The event is organized by the Hebrew University in Toruń.

The aim of the Jewish week is to present Jewish culture and art to the inhabitants of Toruń. "The constant search for cultural identity of Israel is manifested by a wide range of creative art, appreciated and love by many people as the part of their daily lives - says Dr. Maksymilian Tandek, rector the Hebrew University in Toruń.

Within a week of Jewish culture will be held screenings of independent films presented at the 7th International Film Festival "Jewish Motifs", and lectures presenting the role of woman in Jewish society and issues related to the Yiddish language. As well as provide elements of history associated with the presence of Jews in Toruń, throughout the week will feature displays.

"Israeli children's illustration" is a presentation the most interesting children's book illustrations made by prominent designers."Israel Yesterday and today" is an exhibition presenting  on 14 boards, the 60-year history of the State of Israel. "Neighbors who no longer exists" - it is, in turn, an exhibition of photographs of Daniel Pach.

The participants of those events will also be able to see the sculptures of Mati Jagenmeer, the student of the Hebrew University.The attraction of the last night will be the concert of Inah.

Admission to all events is free.
Jewish Cultural Week is held under the patronage of Mayor of the City of Toruń, Michał Zalewski.

Summer in the middle of winter

Hot rhythms of the black continent will fill the twenty-first edition of Africa Reggae Festival which begins on the 28th of January in the student’s club “Od Nowa” in Toruń. The reggae music stars will play for a noble aim  – the construction of deep wells in Sudan.

Africa Reggae Festival is one of the oldest reggae event held in Poland. An annual musical concert is organized by the association “Toruń initiative group – the new society”, the student’s club “Od Nowa” and Polish Humanitarian Action. Co-organizer of the festival is the City of Toruń.

All editions of the event gathered many fans and hosted the most acclaimed performers of reggae and ska music, at the festival played the legendary bands Izrael, Bakshis, Daab. This year in just two days of the festival will play twelve artists, among others Vavamuffin, Bakshish, Ziggie Piggie, Paraliż Band, Natural Mystic and Lion Vibrations.

Origins of the event which has become the cultural showcase of Toruń back to 1991 year, for the first eight editions festival was held under the banner Africa is hungry, since the entire proceeds from the event was destined for feeding children in Africa, in 1999 the organizers adopted the polonized name AFRICA and since 2003 year the event takes place under the name Africa Reggae Festival. Since the inception of the festival, its total income is transferred to the poorest countries of Africa such as Zambia, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Congo and Tanzania.

Africa Reggae Festival supports the water campaign of Polish Humanitarian Action which provides help to all those whom the war, natural disasters, economic globalization, poverty, excessive water consumption in developed countries deprived of access to safe drinking water. So far from water supplies created by the Polish Humanitarian Organization benefit 300,000 people. This year thanks to revenue from the previous edition was built the well in Bor in southern Sudan.

Premiere in The Wilama Horzycy in Toruń

“The New Don Quixote” staged by Katarzyna Raduszyńska is the second premiere performance during the theatrical season 2010/2011.

Katarzyna Raduszyńska is a graduate of Acting Department State Drama School in Wrocław and a graduate of Directing Department The Aleksander Zelwerowicz State Theatre Academy. Katarzyna Raduszyńska worked as assistant director on productions Krystian Lupa, Robert Wilson, Agnieszka Glińska. The scenario of “The New Don Quixote” is based on texts Aleksander Fredro, the popular nineteenth Polish playwright. This is a story about the life of man who is looking for true love. The performance of the Wiliam Horzyca Theatre in Toruń is an attempt to portrait the Fredro’s character.

In the performance play actors of the Wiliam Horzyca Theater in Toruń: Maria Kierzkowska, Anna Romanowicz-Kozanecka, Anna Magdalska-Milczarczyk, Aleksandra Lis, Sławomir Maciejewski, Marek Milczarczyk, Niko Niakas, Grzegorz Wiśniewski.

Sets and costumes are designed by Paweł Walicki, scenario was developed by Katarzyna Raduszyńska and Wojciech Zrałek-Kossakowski.
